In addition to the wonderful dinners and wine we enjoyed at restaurants and in our rental cottage, we also got to visit two Cape May wineries while we were there. The first was a new one that only opened a few weeks ago and we had not yet visited-Seahorse Farm Winery (pictured above). My wife and I checked this great spot out on a day that my wife and I were the only ones who were ready to leave the beach that day. So we decided to do a couple of flights, while enjoying the patio, which was shaded.
Seahorse Farm Winery
The newest winery in the Garden State is located in Lower Township. It is a former equestrian facility, that actually still trains horses on the grounds. The owner and founder of this vineyard and winery is a retired surgeon named Dr. John Stratis. The tasting room and facilities reflect the architectural heritage of the equestrian history and farming. The result is a comfortable laid back vibe, while offering a beautiful interior (including some elegant stained glass windows), and a lovely patio that allow for a panoramic view of the vineyards.
The vines here are still young, though they already offer estate grown Alberino and Pinot Grigio. The reds and other whites offered are brought in from Washington state. They are hoping that next year they will be able to provide patrons with all estate grown grapes in their wines (including their reds).
Speaking of their wines…
White Flight
- Pinot Grigio-a decent light and refreshing version.
- Albariño-Our favorite white, with fragrant notes of lemon zest and grapefruit.
- Chardonnay-A dry, medium-bodied version with hints of apple.
Red Flight (“The Stained Glass Series”)
- Merlot-Dry, smooth, and medium to full-bodied notes of black cherry.
- Syrah-This was my favorite in the tasting. It was dry, medium plus bodied, very smooth, with deep color and robust notes of dark fruit.
- Cabernet Sauvignon-a good version of Cab with ample, but smooth tannins.
Our Take Aways
Carol and I enjoyed our short visit and look forward to revisiting, when we have more time to explore. We took away a bottle of their Syrah and Albarino (pictured below). The Albarino was brought home to our house and enjoyed there.
Cape May Winery
We knew we could enjoy a late light lunch along with a bit of wine here. A highlight of our tapas choices here included a couple of orders of their Mediterranean Octopus, olives, roasted potatoes, and sofrito and Maryland Crab cake slider (pictured below).
Our wines enjoyed with our lunch: Cape May Winery 2022 Red Blend and their 2025 Albarino. Both were very good.
Cape May Winery 2022 Red Blend-This one is a bone dry, full-bodied blend of Syrah, Cab, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Chambourcin. It was delicious with our Octopus.
Cape May Winery 2025 Stone Series Albarino-A wonderful dry white with a fresh fragrance of lemon and tropical fruit notes on the palate. It went very well with the crab cake slider.
What a fun week we had in Cape May and always love our visits here. Can’t wait until our Grill Night dinner here in September!
