The last time we visited Iron Plow Vineyards in Columbus, we found out that the rumor was true: the original owners sold and it is now Tramonti Vineyards. You will still see many reminders of the previous establishment (even the old sign is still standing). But as you can see, the new owners have already made many changes, from adding some beautiful touches outdoors to what promises to be a larger, more upscale tasting room with views of the vineyard through the windows. The photos above and below capture some of the changes you can see now.
Most of their wines they offer now are from the original owners with the old labels. However, there are several new wines on the menu, reflecting a big change. There are a few wines that are currently being offered that were made with grapes from the owner’s connection in Tuscany, Italy. We decided to do a couple of flights and “catch up.”
The Wine
In addition to the Italian varietals now on the menu, they also added a couple of South African wines-Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. My wife and I did flights of three wines, trying to try one or two from the previous owners, but also trying some of the new winemaker’s wines (especially those new Italian wines).
Reds
- 2020 Cab Franc-This was my favorite red at previous visits. It is medium-bodied and smooth with subtle red fruit flavors.
- 2022 Red Tuscan Blend-A very good full-bodied blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Syrah (20%).
- 2022 Merlot-Oak aged for 18 months, this Merlot was a deep ruby color, with raspberry and blackberry notes.
Whites
- Tramonti 2023 Vermentino-The grapes were sourced from Tuscany. I don’t know if this grape can be grown in New Jersey, but this one is wonderful-full-bodied, well-balanced, with tasty citrus notes. This was our favorite wine in the tasting.
- 2024 Chardonnay-Sourced from South Africa, this is an unoaked version with a hint of apricot.
- 2024 Dry Rose-A tasty Rose made from an interesting assortment of grapes (Granache, Barbera, Cab, and Riesling).
I am hopeful that they will be using more of their estate grown grapes in the future, though the Italian wines (especially the Vermentino) were terrific. I also hope that the White Tuscan Blend will be available next time (they were sold out of this one).
Our Take Away
Even though our cellar is overflowing, we had to bring home a bottle of their wonderful Vermentino, pictured below. They also sell a very good olive oil that we tasted and decided to bring home a bottle of that, as well. It is also from Tuscany.
