Saddlehill Winery June 2025

June 23, 2025 by David K Mullen

Despite the threatening weather, we decided to take a chance on visiting Saddlehill Vineyards in Voorhees with our friends, Jackie and Rob. We decided to start with a couple of flights of wine to help steer us in the right direction. While we had previously visited twice before, we knew there was a new vintage available, and perhaps a new wine as well. I was also curious about how the estate vines were developing and what wines were estate grown and if there were still a number of wines sourced from other New Jersey vineyards (as most of their wines were at our previous visits).

The tasting room is large and beautiful, but we had made reservations for seating on the patio, adjacent to the building. This offered us cover from the wind and rain nearby. We were very fortunate. The rain and wind, kept us cool, without soaking us.

The Wines

As per usual my wife ordered a white flight and I ordered a red flight (sharing them with each other). We remembered that their reds were significantly better than their whites. While we still enjoyed their reds more, their white wines are definitely improving.

White Flight

  • 2023 Pinot Gris-a decent dry version with a refreshing finish.
  • 2024 Sauvignon Blanc-By far our favorite white wine in the flight, with tropical fruit notes and lemongrass on the palate.
  • 2023 Unoaked Chardonnay-Of the two Chards, we both liked this one better, with apple notes and good acidity.
  • 2022 Reserve Chardonnay-Dry, barrel-aged with sone fruit on the palate.

Red Flight

  • 2022 Cab Franc-A very good Cab Franc
  • 2022 Lisa’s Red Blend-A tasty blend of Chambourcin, Regent, and Blaufrankisch.
  • 2022 Coeur d’Est-A very good version of this classic Outer Coastal Plains blend.
  • 2022 Ashenfelter Cabernet Sauvignon-Easily our favorite in the tasting; a dry, well-balanced version with tasty blackberries and very smooth.
  • 2023 Pinot Noir-This was a very pleasant surprise, offered to us by the General Manager, Christopher. The Pinot Noir was recently bottled and this is the first vintage they have offered. It was quite good-light, dry, with ripe cranberry notes; very smooth.

The Food

We all shared some wonderful small pates of Flatbreads with pesto, sliced tomatoes, and pecorino cheese and a second charcuterie board with goat cheese, Manchego cheese, meats, fig jam spread, crackers, walnuts, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Both were very good.

Our Takeaway

While we only brought home one bottle, we were impressed with their current offerings. There is only so much room in our cellar…However, I am already thinking about our next visit and the likelihood that the promising new Pinot Noir, Lisa’s Red Blend, and their Cab Franc might just keep our Ashenfelter Cab company (if we can wait that long before we uncork this one)!

We had a very enjoyable time at Saddlehill Vineyards, despite the weather. In fact we even got another bonus on the way home-a beautiful rainbow clearly visible on the Black Horse Pike. There was actually a double rainbow, though the second one was not as sharp and clear.
