Wine & Celebration in Cape Cod

August 27, 2024 by David K Mullen

Today, I am writing about our six days in Brewster, Massachusetts at a resort called Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. What brought us to Brewster, Massachusetts to celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary? Well Cape Cod was our last stop of our honeymoon (until the money ran out) 50 years ago. We also celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary in Brewster. More recently, we were reminded of the beauty of Ocean Edge Resort a few years ago, when our son presented there and we took advantage of the opportunity to see Sean and his family while on the East Coast in one of our favorite summer spots.

Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club

This beautiful resort is amazing. They have a few top notch restaurants, a great golf course, some excellent tennis courts (clay and hard courts, a small beach, and a few great bars (including one that overlooks the bay and the beach). The accommodations are first rate, with indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness center, and a great huge lawn where they have games set up for families to enjoy. Every day between 4:00-9:00, you can get brick oven pizza, a host of other items, and your choice of craft beers, wine, or cocktails.

My Top Highlights (not in any particular order)

The Lobster

We had lobster rolls on our first night via room service. We arrived later than expected and were exhausted. So, lobster rolls and fries, delivered to our room? Yes, thank you!

We had another great lobster roll on our last night at a great little spot only a few blocks away, called JT’s Seafood, a lobster quiche delivered to our room in the morning, lobster pizza on the Great Lawn, and I had lobster chunks over a pasta dish at Brewster Fish House. We haven’t had so much lobster since we spent a summer in Maine (job-related). Lobster was cheaper than hamburger. We used to have lobster races on the kitchen floor and they’d wind up on our plates soon after.

The Pampering

In addition to the cheery and helpful staff and the daily chocolates, we received free drinks on multiple occasions, a bottle of champagne, a luscious piece of cheese cake and chocolate to share in our room after our anniversary dinner. We received the “Cruise Treatment” to our bed (complete with fresh rose petals and the towels made into hearts-see below).

The Beach Bar

In addition to a well-stocked bar and great mixologists, they have a small, but decent choice of snacks and more substantial fare. Local craft beers, and a few decent wines were a nice surprise. The view from this bar is great. The photos below don’t do it justice. The staff were all very nice and very competent. On two occasions, we were given free drinks, when they learned we were celebrating our 50th anniversary. It was kind of obvious when we exchanged our new anniversary rings!

Dinner at The Orleans Inn

Great food, service, view, and surprisingly good prices. We enjoyed an excellent appetizer (crab cakes) and our entrees: Panko Baked Cod and Scallops and Peaches Casserole. Both of these meals were delicious and we enjoyed our bottle of St Francis Chardonnay and the view of the water and boats anchored nearby. The scallops and peaches seemed like odd casserole companions, but that dish was incredible!

Anniversary Dinner at the Ocean Terrace Restaurant at Ocean Edge

Located on the roof of the Mansion, there are expansive views of the bay in the distance, as well as the tennis courts, and beautifully landscaped grounds. The food was wonderful. I had the Day Boat Scallops and my wife chose the Roasted Native Haddock, with crispy lobster and potato salad, green beans, and dill butter. Delicious and such a special night!

The Wine, Beer, & Spirits

Among the awesome wines we enjoyed over the course of our stay (Note: we ate mostly seafood so the wines were mostly white):

Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Ramey 2021 Russian River Chardonnay-Delicious notes of peach and lemon.

2019 Patz & Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

2021 Colene Clemens Dopp Creek Pinot Noir

Boen Russian River Pinot Noir

St. Francis 2017 Chardonnay Sonoma County

Ocean Edge Champagne (produced by Woodbridge Cellars in Lodi, CA)-Surprisingly good (though not as good as the Hawk Haven Sparkler)

Hawk Haven Vineyards 2020 Brut Methode Champenoise-The only NJ wine I brought, since I knew there would be no BYOB’s.

My faves (including beers and spirits)

The Hawk Haven Vineyards Methode Champenoise-the only NJ wine I brought, since I knew there would be no BYOB’s. It is made with Pinot Noir (66%) and Chardonnay (34%). Wonderful notes of brioche, pear, lemon, and vanilla. Delicious!

Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay-Perfect with our lobster rolls; wonderful notes of citrus (especially lime) and minerality.

2021 Colene Clemens Dopp Creek Pinot Noir-a gem from Willamette Valley. Loved by the critics (and me).

Bayzo’s Brew (Pale Ale made in Hyannis)-the best Pale Ale I have had in quite a while.

Cape Cod Mojito-Nantucket Distilleries Cranberry Vodka, Mint, Cranberries, Lime, and Soda. A taste of Cape Cod!
