Double Nickel Brewing Company

November 6, 2022 by David K Mullen

My wife and I recently celebrated some good news by visiting Double Nickel Brewing Company in Pennsauken Township on Route 73. They have been around since 2015 and I have enjoyed a couple of their brews in the past, but this was my first visit to their taproom.

The most impressive thing I can tell you about this brewery is that there was not one of their beers that I tasted (11 in all) that I did not like. Yes, I had my favorites and liked a few more than others, but would gladly drink any of them. I was also impressed with the staff-knowledgeable and very friendly. The taproom itself was larger than I initially thought. Besides the main room, there is a back room with more tables and additional seating, and a loft area upstairs. My wife and I got there soon after they opened, so we were able to have a seat at the end of their long bar that we had almost to ourselves. There is also some seating outdoors, but with the small sprinkling of patrons at this hour, we felt very comfortable enjoying our brews indoors.

I tried one or more brews from each of the following categories, though my wife and I both enjoy dark brews a bit more (especially in the fall and winter).

Hoppy

  • Anniversary Triple IPA-9.7% ABV. You don’t see many of these, but it was well-balanced and did not disappoint.
  • IPA (India Pale Ale)-8% ABV. A great, every day IPA.

Crisp

  • Vienna-a very good beer. Vienna Lagers are underrated, in my opinion.
  • Pilsner-Light and crisp, but with a lot more flavor than a Budweiser.

Dark

  • Stout-a very good stout, with lots of dark roasted malt flavor; 8.5% ABV.
  • Mother Leeds (Brown Ale)-6.8% ABV; a good traditional Brown Ale.
  • Nocturnal Creatures VI (Imperial Stout)-“S’mores inspired.” This could make a great dessert-chocolate, Graham crackers, and a hint of coffee, and 10.3% ABV to top off the meal!
  • Midnight Nectar (Barrel Aged Stout)-Stout brewed with Graham crackers ands aged in Mead barrels! A very unique brew to be sure! ABV=8.5%

Fruit Forward

Pop Jukebox (Orange Creamsicle Milkshake IPA)-7.1% ABV I didn’t think I would like this one, but when my wife said, “That sounds interesting,” our server gave us a taste and we both liked it. My wife loved it! It was creamy, with a bit of citrus and vanilla.

Strong

  • Belgian Golden Ale-A nice entry in the Belgian category-smooth and delicious-with a punch!
  • Chris Barley (American Barley Wine)-Clever and tasty! 9.6% ABV

My wife and I loved this brewery. We wish it were closer and the nearby traffic wasn’t so crazy. However, while waiting for our next visit, they sell their beers at dozens of local liquor stores. The next time I want to try their Marbled Buffalo (aged for 25 months in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels). I liked that there were many styles to try (not just a half dozen IPAs  and one or two other varieties). Double Nickel is also not skimpy on the alcohol levels, with quite a few in the 7-10% ABV levels.

My Take Aways

We brought home a four pack of Nocturnal Creatures Imperial Stout, a four pack of Pop Jukebox, a six pack of Belgian Golden Ale, and a growler of Chris Barley American Barley Wine in the big can. I added a t-shirt.

Finally, a personal note: It’s great to have my partner in crime feeling good enough to accompany me in my journey to explore NJ wineries, breweries, and distilleries!
