My Top 10 NJ Wine Bargains

May 24, 2020 by David K Mullen

During these difficult and uncertain times, I thought it was a good time to suggest a few of my favorite bargain New Jersey Wines (good quality for under $20). Since I last compiled a similar list, many of the wines are either not available or now cost over $20 per bottle. This list was compiled with several limitations. Besides the cost being under $20, I chose only currently available bottles, according to winery websites. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions of tasting and travel I also limited my list to those presently in my cellar or those most recently tasted. My previous list was 20 wines and I stated that I could have added 20 more. But during these tough times, the cost, availability and proximity are increasingly important factors. Hopefully, you notice there are no annoying pop-up ads on my site.

10 Great NJ Wine Bargains (Under $20):

Dry Whites

  1. Sharrott Winery Pinot Grigio ($16.99)-A crisp, dry version with lively acidity
  2. Autumn Lake Albarino ($17)-My favorite under $20. They also make a super oaked version (the only one I know of in the state), but at $21, worth the price.
  3. Auburn Road The White Bottle ($18)-A lightly oaked, creamy version, at an affordable price
  4. Hawk Haven Vineyards Pinot Grigio ($18.99)-Just a hint of sweetness in this tasty Pinot

Dry Reds

  1. Hawk Haven Flying Press Red ($14.99)-Perhaps my favorite inexpensive, every night red-great with barbecue, burgers or pizza.
  2. Auburn Road Good Karma ($15)-a close second and only a penny more
  3. Bellview Winery Solavito ($15)-A great red blend at a great price.
  4. White Horse Winery Chambourcin ($18)-Voted best in Philly (Philadelphia Magazine)
  5. White Horse Winery Dry Rose 2018 ($19)-My favorite NJ Rose wine (and under $20). The 2019 was just released.

Sweet

  1. Sharrott Winery Just Peachy Sangria ($13.99)-My perennial favorite Sangria

Celebrations

It has been a week to celebrate all sorts of things. As usual we find a way to incorporate wine into any celebration.

Thursday, May 21st was National Chardonnay Day. My choice to celebrate the day…Auburn Road Vineyards 2018 White Bottle Chardonnay

Friday, May 22nd was Open Local Wine Day. My choice was Beneduce Vineyards 2014 Blue2 Blaufrankisch.

Saturday, May 23 was World Turtle Day. Below is a photo of how we rolled with that one (Autumn Lake Winery Tortuga-blend of Cab Franc and Merlot).

Tomorrow is a more somber holiday to celebrate those who gave their lives for their country…My heartfelt thanks to those who gave their lives. I salute you. I also want to thank those who are currently serving our country-in all that you do during our present crisis.

Let’s be careful out there!

Cheers!
