New Jersey Blaufrankisch

June 9, 2019 by David K Mullen

Blaufrankisch in New Jersey? Not only can you find it here, you can find award-winning, highly rated Blaufrankisch in New Jersey. What is Blaufrankisch you ask? It is a rich, black grape originating in Austria, with a new-found following, here in New Jersey. I’m always hesitant to use the words black grape, as we tend to think in terms of red or white grapes, but Wine Folly describes it as “black fruit.” It is the parent grape of Gamay and Zweigelt. Pictured above is Beneduce Vineyard’s version called, Blue 2.”  While it is currently the only bottle I have in my cellar, I assure you there are presently quite a few New Jersey wineries producing high quality Blaufrankisch.

Why should you care about this varietal? It has sufficient acidity to pair with a vast assortment of foods, while having a rich color and robust flavor and it is tasty enough to be enjoyed on its own merits. Like Syrah or Malbec? Try Blaufrankisch. I think you will like it.

In addition, with summer barbecues already popping up, you will find Blaufrankisch will more than fill the bill to be enjoyed with your grilled meats and rich sauces with a little spice. So where can you find a New Jersey Blaufrankisch? There are numerous sources, but I will share my personal favorites and those that have recently received awards and accolades.

These are a few of my recent favorites:

  • Beneduce Vineyard’s Blue 2-A classic version that I love; Their 2015 Blue 2 received a 92 Point rating from James Suckling and a 90 point rating from the Beverage Tasting Institute in 2018.
  • Mount Salem Vineyards Blaufrankisch-not only is this a great Blaufrankisch, Peter Leitner also makes a couple of fine blends utilizing Blaufrankisch, in addition to a couple of other grapes more frequently found in Austria (Zweigelt and St.Laurent). Lettie Teague (Wall Street Journal wine columnist) stated: “It is one of the best Blaufrankisch I’ve tasted outside of Austria.” I really need to go back and get some for my cellar.
  • Bellview Winery Blaufrankisch-This is a wonderful award winning version, with a delightful smokiness. Their 2016 Blaufrankisch received a 91 rating from the Beverage Testing Institute and a Gold Medal at the 2018 New Jersey Wine Competition.
  • Autumn Lake Winery Blaufrankisch-I am eagerly awaiting the newest vintage of their Blaufrankisch, as this varietal has consistently been one of my favorites there.

In addition to those listed above, the following wineries make a Blaufrankisch, though I have not tried them recently or, in some cases, haven’t tried them yet.

  • Tomasello Winery (with their very extensive menu, it has been a few years since I have tried their Blaufrankisch)
  • DiBella Winery (This is a relatively new offering for them; it was released shortly after my last visit there)
  • Laurita Winery also makes Lemberger (another name for Blaufrankisch). It has been over three years since I have tried their version.

I’m sure I missed a couple of others, as this varietal is gaining popularity and in planting acreage around the state. If you have not yet tried this interesting and delicious wine, it is a great varietal and New Jersey makes some terrific examples. Try one and tell me what you think.

Cheers!
