Four Sisters Winery

December 26, 2016 by David K Mullen

The Four Sisters Winery (named after Matty’s and Laurie’s four daughters) just added a new large deck with expansive views of their vineyard. The addition accommodates more people and provides the outdoor space that was needed for the winery’s increasingly popular entertainment and special events. Matty and his wife own the 250-acre farm and have been growing grapes there since 1981 and recently celebrated their 32nd year of winemaking at Four Sisters Winery. They started out making five different wines and now make over 20 wines. Most of their wines are non-vinifera varietals (not produced with classic European grapes like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot , etc.). However, they make some very good varietals which are more hardy in the colder weather (like Vidal Blanc, Chambourcin and Traminette, to name a few) as well as their popular fruit wines.

Four Sisters offers the following white wines: Cayuga (semi-dry), Filament (sweet white table wine), Niagara (sweet), Traminette (semi-dry), Vidal Blanc 2014 (dry) and Warren Hills White (semi-sweet). Warren Hills is the name of the American Viticultural Area or AVA in which these wines are produced.

Four Sisters Winery reds include Beaver Creek Red (sweet), Chambourcin, Chambourcin Reserve (dry), Holiday Seasoned (spicy), Leon Millot (dry), Papa’s Red (dry) and Warren Hills Red (dry). They also make a Rose (Cedar Hill Rose – sweet) and a Blush (Merrill Blush –  semi-dry).

Four Sisters offers these sweet wines: Captain’s Choice (fortified apple wine), Cherry Melissa (sweet, yet tart), Mia’s Blueberry (semi-sweet), Robin’s Raspberry (semi-sweet), Sadie’s Apple (semi-sweet), Spicy Sisters (semi-sweet) and Strawberry Serena (semi-sweet).

The Vidal Blanc (dry and very refreshing) was my favorite here, though I enjoyed the Chambourcin Reserve, as well. Enjoy a glass or bottle of your favorite on their deck and take in the magnificent view of their vineyard all around you.

In the 32 years since Four Sisters Winery opened they have won over 100 regional, national, and international awards for their wines. They won three Bronze Medals in the 2015 New Jersey Wine Competition for their 2014 Vidal Blanc, NV Merrill Blush and NV Warren Hills Red Blend. Two years before that the winery took three Bronze Medals at the same competition for their NV Holiday Seasoned, Papa’s Red and Cedar Hill Rose.

Four Sisters Winery is open five days a week from January through March (closed on Tuesday and Wednesday) and six days a week from April through December (closed Wednesday). Their hours are from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Complimentary tastings are offered daily and there are free tours on the weekend. Their hours may vary over the holidays. There is always something fun happening here — from Barbecue Weekends to Mystery Theatre and from Barefoot Grape Stomping to Christmas in the Country. Check out their website for up-to-date info.
